You know the bit. Someone shares their screen, the tab bar is a row of identical grey slivers with no readable titles, and everyone laughs. Tab hoarder. Chaos gremlin. Get some help.
It is a fair joke and a lousy diagnosis. There is real research on how people use tabs, and it says something more specific, and more flattering, than “you are disorganised”.
Here is what 20 plus open tabs actually tells you.
You are statistically unusual, and by more than you think
The most detailed study of this is still one from the University of Toronto, presented at CHI 2010. Patrick Dubroy and Ravin Balakrishnan built a Firefox extension that logged the real browsing of 21 people for between 13 and 21 days each, then backed it up with diary entries and interviews.
Most of their participants sat at a median of six tabs or fewer. Seven of them had a median of one or two.
One participant had a median of 17. Another peaked at 42, at which point, as the researchers noted, the tab bar was scrolling two or three times over.
So if you are sitting at 20 plus as a normal Tuesday, you are not at the far end of a bell curve. You are in a different group entirely.
It is a habit, not a decision
This is the finding I think about most.
The researchers noticed a cluster of participants who created about three times as many tabs as everyone else. They called them tab power users. Then, separately, in the interviews, they asked people why they opened links in new tabs.
Every single one of the tab power users said the same thing, and none of the other participants did: it had become habitual. They were not deciding to open a new tab. Their hand did it.
That is worth sitting with, because it reframes the whole problem. If you have 30 tabs open, you did not make 30 decisions to keep 30 pages. You made one decision, years ago, that hardened into a reflex, and it has been quietly firing ever since.
Which is also why “just close some tabs” never works. You are being asked to fix the symptom of a motor habit with a bit of willpower, several hundred times a day.
You are not disorganised. You are holding a project in your head
Ask people why they keep tabs open and almost nobody says storage.
In the Toronto study, the single most common reason, given by 17 of 21 participants, was reminding. The tab was a note to self. Something still needs doing here.
A 2021 study from Carnegie Mellon and UC Berkeley called “When the Tab Comes Due” went further. Researchers interviewed information workers and walked through every open tab on their machines, four separate times over two weeks. What they found is that tab hoarding is rarely laziness. People use tabs as an external mental model, a way of mapping a complicated task onto the browser so they do not have to hold it all in their head.
So a full tab bar is usually a sign of the opposite of carelessness. It means you are running something complex enough that you have outsourced part of it. Twenty tabs is often twenty threads of one real project.
The problem is not the instinct. The instinct is good. The problem is that the tab bar is a genuinely terrible place to keep a to-do list. Every item is a 14 pixel favicon, in no useful order, with no due dates and no way to mark anything done. You built a system, and the tool fought you.
About half of them were never doing anything
Here is the less flattering half.
In the same Toronto data, 25 per cent of tabs were never selected. Not once. They were opened, they sat there consuming memory and bar space, and they were closed without the person ever switching to them. Another large group were selected exactly once and never returned to.
So somewhere near half the tabs in a heavy bar are not part of the project at all. They are debris from a search you finished twenty minutes ago.
You almost certainly cannot tell which half by looking. That is the actual problem.
The cost is not the tabs. It is the moving between them
A tab does not only cost you when you click it. It costs you every time your eyes cross the bar.
Working memory is small. The research consensus has moved on from the old seven plus or minus two figure to something closer to four items an adult can actively hold at once. Every tab in your peripheral vision is a candidate for one of those four slots.
Then there is what the psychologist Sophie Leroy named attention residue. Her 2009 research found that when you switch from one task to another, part of your attention stays stuck on the first one, and your performance on the second suffers for it. The switch is never clean. You carry a bit of the old task with you.
Tabs make switching almost free, which sounds like a feature and is not. Free switching means more switching, and every switch leaves residue.
Getting back is not free either. A CHI 2007 study by Shamsi Iqbal and Eric Horvitz found it took people 11 to 16 minutes to return to their original task after an interruption.
One more finding worth knowing if your laptop has ever given up on you mid task: in the 2021 study, around a quarter of participants reported that their browser or their whole computer had crashed because of how many tabs they had open.
What it does not say about you
It does not say you lack discipline. The people in these studies were information workers doing real jobs, and the heaviest tab users were the ones running the most parallel work.
It does not mean you are bad at focusing. It means you are doing several things that each deserve focus, and the only place to put them was a row of 14 pixel icons.
And it is not a character flaw you can fix by feeling worse about it, which is roughly what every “digital declutter” article is really proposing.
What actually helps
None of the research says “have fewer tabs” and stops there, because nobody has ever managed to follow that advice.
Give the reminders somewhere better to live. Seventeen of twenty one people were using tabs as reminders. That is the job to solve. Anything that is genuinely a to-do belongs in an actual list where it can have a name and a deadline.
Decide the ceiling once, in advance. The sunk cost effect is real and it works against you in the moment: once you have spent effort finding something, closing it feels like losing it. Deciding once how many tabs you are willing to run is far easier than deciding forty separate times whether this particular tab is worth keeping.
Let the dead ones go. A quarter of them were never opened. The page is still on the internet, and the search that found it took you eleven seconds.
Protect the switch, not the tab. The expensive part is not the tab existing, it is you moving between them.
This is more or less why I built >=PlayingFild. It sets a ceiling you choose once and then enforces it for you, so the decision is not yours to relitigate forty times a day. It ranks your tabs by what you actually keep coming back to rather than what you opened most recently, so the important ones drift left and stay there. Tabs that go over the limit are parked in a stash rather than destroyed, because the sunk cost fear is legitimate and closing things should not feel like a loss. And it groups pages about the same topic together, so twenty tabs reads as three projects instead of twenty problems. All of the classification happens on your device.
I built it because I have this habit too, and the twentieth time I lost a tab I actually needed, I stopped believing that trying harder was the answer.
The tab bar was designed in the early 2000s for a web you navigated to. We now use it to think with. It was never built for that, and having 20 of them open says less about your self-control than it does about a tool that never caught up.
