What the research actually says about having too many tabs open

Everyone jokes about it. The screenshot of a browser with ninety tabs, each one shrunk down to a sliver with no readable title, gets posted somewhere every week. It is treated as a personality trait, a bit like being bad at mornings.

The research tells a less funny story. Tab overload is not a quirk. It is a measurable drag on your attention, and a surprising share of those tabs were never doing anything for you in the first place.

Here is what the studies have found.

A quarter of tabs are never even looked at

The most useful data on this is still a study out of the University of Toronto, presented at CHI 2010. Patrick Dubroy and Ravin Balakrishnan built a Firefox extension that logged the real browsing behaviour of 21 people for between 13 and 21 days each, then backed it up with diary entries and interviews.

The finding that should stop you: 25 per cent of tabs were never selected. They were opened, they sat in the tab bar taking up space and memory, and they were closed without the person ever switching to them once.

Another large chunk were selected exactly once and never returned to.

So somewhere close to half the tabs you open are doing no work at all. They are not a library. They are debris.

The same study found the spread between normal users and hoarders is enormous. Most participants sat at a median of six tabs or fewer. One sat at a median of 17. Another peaked at 42 open at once, at which point, as the researchers dryly noted, the tab bar was scrolling two or three times over.

Tabs are not storage. They are a to-do list you cannot read

Ask people why they keep tabs open and they do not say “storage”. In the Toronto study, the single most common reason, given by 17 of 21 participants, was reminding. Leaving the tab open was a note to self that something still needed doing.

A 2021 study from Carnegie Mellon and UC Berkeley, “When the Tab Comes Due”, went deeper into this. The researchers interviewed information workers and walked through every open tab on their work computers, four separate times over two weeks.

What they found is that tab hoarding is rarely laziness. People use tabs as an external mental model, a way of mapping a complicated task onto the browser itself. The tab bar becomes an improvised task manager.

The problem is that it is a terrible one. A to-do list where every item is a 14 pixel favicon, in no particular order, with no due dates and no way to mark anything done. And because you paid to build it, in time spent searching and opening and arranging, you do not want to throw it away. The researchers describe a genuine sunk cost effect: once you have invested effort in finding something, closing it feels like losing it.

So the pile grows, the individual items become less findable, and the thing you built to reduce your mental load starts adding to it.

That study also turned up a detail worth knowing if your laptop has ever given up on you mid task. Around a quarter of participants reported that their browser or their whole computer had crashed because of the number of tabs they had open.

The cost is paid every time you glance at the bar

Here is the part people underrate. A tab does not only cost you when you click it. It costs you every time your eyes cross the tab bar.

Working memory is small. The research consensus has moved on from the old “seven plus or minus two” figure to something closer to four items that an adult can actively hold at once. Every tab in your peripheral vision is a candidate for one of those four slots.

Then there is what psychologist Sophie Leroy named attention residue. Her 2009 research found that when you switch from one task to another, part of your attention stays stuck on the first one, and your performance on the new task suffers for it. The switch is not clean. You carry a bit of the old task with you.

Tabs make switching almost free, which sounds good and is not. Free switching means more switching, and every switch leaves residue.

Getting back is not free either. A CHI 2007 study by Shamsi Iqbal and Eric Horvitz tracked what actually happens after an interruption and found it took people 11 to 16 minutes to return to the original task.

You may have seen the figure “23 minutes and 15 seconds” quoted for this. It is worth knowing that it has no printed source. It comes from interviews with the researcher Gloria Mark rather than from any published paper, and people have gone looking. The 11 to 16 minute figure is the one that is actually written down in peer reviewed work, and it is bad enough.

What about old tabs going stale?

There is a widespread belief that a tab you have not touched in a few hours is effectively dead, and that the odds of ever going back to it collapse after some specific number of hours.

I want to be straight with you: I could not find a solid study putting a number on that. It is repeated in a lot of places without a source behind it.

What we do know is more indirect, and still points the same way. Web revisitation research shows return probability falls off steadily over the hours after you first visit a page. Browser makers clearly believe in staleness too, because they have built products around it. Chrome on Android automatically shifts tabs you have not used in 21 days into a separate “inactive” section. Chrome’s Memory Saver suspends background tabs and now uses a model to guess which ones you are likely to come back to, rather than a fixed timer, which is a fairly loud admission that most of them will not be.

And it fits what the Toronto data already told us. If a quarter of tabs are never selected at all, then a tab that has sat untouched through a whole working day was probably never going to be selected either.

Treat the “six hour rule” as a decent rule of thumb rather than a finding. The finding underneath it is simply this: the longer a tab sits, the less likely it is that you were ever coming back.

So what actually helps

None of the research says “have fewer tabs” and stops there, because nobody has ever managed to follow that advice. What it points at is more specific.

Give the reminders somewhere better to live. Seventeen of twenty one people were using tabs as reminders. That is the job to solve. Anything that is a genuine to-do belongs in an actual list where it can have a name and a deadline. The tab is a bad container for it.

Set a ceiling and let something else enforce it. The sunk cost effect is real and it is working against you in the moment. Deciding once, in advance, how many tabs you are willing to run is far easier than deciding forty separate times whether this particular tab is worth keeping.

Let the dead ones go. A quarter of them were never opened. Closing a tab you have not touched all day costs you almost nothing, because the page is still on the internet, and the search that found it took you eleven seconds.

Protect the switch, not the tab. The expensive part is not the tab existing, it is you moving between them. Fewer, longer stretches on one thing will do more for you than any amount of tidying.

The tab bar was designed in the early 2000s for a web you navigated to. We now use it to think with. It was never built for that, and the research is fairly clear that it is not very good at it.
