When you hit the cap, close the least useful tab rather than letting the pile grow. The point is to make every open tab earn its place.
4. Protect the tabs you actually need
Pin or shield the important ones so a cleanup never takes them out.
Reference docs, project dashboards, notes, the page you will come back to in ten minutes. These should be untouchable. Nothing kills trust in a tab manager faster than losing something you needed, and once that happens most people uninstall it that day.
5. Track real usage, not whether a tab is open
A tab that has sat untouched for twenty minutes is not the same as a tab you are actively reading and typing in, but to most tools they look identical.
Better signals: scroll depth and speed, typing, clicks, media playback. Those tell you whether a tab is being used, rather than whether it exists. Media matters more than people expect. A lecture at minute thirty has no mouse movement and no keystrokes, and a naive tool will call that idle and close it on you.
6. Reward focus instead of only restricting distraction
Hard blocks work for some people. They fall apart when a site is useful and distracting depending on the moment, which describes most of the modern web.
A better pattern is earning break time on productive pages and spending it when you choose. The difference is not cosmetic. Blocking treats you as the problem to be contained. Earning treats attention as something you build. For anyone whose attention does not run on willpower by default, that difference decides whether the tool survives the first week.
7. Use a context aware tool when blocking is too blunt
Traditional blockers treat a whole domain as good or bad. That breaks immediately on YouTube, Reddit, X, news sites, and any platform that hosts both work and procrastination.
Here is the failure mode nobody talks about. These tools do not get uninstalled because they are too weak. They get uninstalled because they are wrong. Nobody deletes a blocker for letting them slack off. They delete it because it blocked them halfway through a lecture. Being wrong often enough to be resented is what ends it, and the industry keeps responding by building something stricter.

Can a tool really tell productive from distracting?
